If you’ve never kiteboarded before than this will be your first chance to feel the raw power of a kite. You will have a 1:1 student to teacher ratio. You and your instructor will go over the following kiteboard skills, so you can learn how to do this extreme sport safely:

1. Setup Your Kiteboard Gear - Setting up your equipment is extremely important. It can mean the difference between a happy kite session on the water or an unhappy one in the hospital. We will spend plenty of time on making sure you get this part right because we want you safe!

2. Wind-Windows, Self-Rescue, & Other Kiteboard Knowledge - Your instructor will go into detail on how to fly your kite, what to do if you're a mile offshore and you break a line, and other essential skills that will make your kiteboarding experience fun and safe.

3. Fly A Trainer Kite - If you haven't had the chance to fly a trainer kite, your instructor may have you fly one for about 10 minutes before you fly a power kite. We do this because it makes flying a power kite safer, but it also makes you learn faster.

4. Launch & Land A Power Kite - Your instructor will show you how to launch and land a power kite. This entails learning hand signals, knowing where to position yourself if you're the kite flyer or kite catcher, and when to let go or catch the kite.

5. Fly A Power Kite With Assistance - You will fly the power kite with the assistance of your instructor. Your instructor will show you how to control the kite with just a push and pull of the wrist.

6. Fly The Kite Solo - Once you've mastered flying the kite assisted, you're instructor will let you fly the kite by yourself. Your instructor will be right there with you if you need help.

7. Body Drag - This will be your first chance to feel the raw power of the kite. You will experience this by body dragging in the water well away from land and other obstacles. Your instructor will be dragging with you the enitre time until you feel comfortable to take over completely.

8. Solo Body Drag Upwind- After you feel comfortable body dragging with your instructor, you will have the chance to drag without him. This part is essential before you get a hold of the board.

9. Board Drags - You will get the board, but you will learn to drag with it. Once you can stay upwind with the board, this is when its time to water start.

10. Water Starts - You will be shown how and where to position your kite and board, so you can easily get up and start riding.

INSTRUCTORS

Marcus "Flash" Austin
Marcus "Flash" Austin is one of kiteboarding's best-known athletes. Austin's flashy tricks increased the popularity of pro kiteboarding. Austin won the World Championship of Kiteboarding in 2000. He was also the first person to kiteboard across the 70-mile (113-kilometer) stretch of water from Norway to Denmark.

In the late 1990's, Austin and about 35 other kiteboarders created their own beach for kiteboarding. Ka'a Point in Hawaii littered with trash and rocks. Austin and his friends cleaned up the beach and began to kiteboard there. Today, Ka'a Point is known as Kitebeach.

Maui Kitesurfing Champion 1997 and 1998
Maui Red Bull King of the Air Champion 2000 and 2001
Tarifa Red Bull Sky Ride Freestyle and Distance Champion 2000
New Zealand Red Bull Sky Ride Freestyle and Hang-time Champion 2001
Naish Summer Race Series Champion 2012
Just nomiated as the first kiteboarding ambassador for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janerio.
The list goes on and on

Jared Carlson (aka Jay):
Jay can rip it up in the waves and can also throw down some technical handle-passes when he has to put the peanut gallery to shame. He has competed in many professional kiteboarding contests and has been on the kiteboarding scene since 2002.

His enthusiastic approach towards beginners has led to a large increase in the number of happy kiteboarders and surfers. And he has continued to adapt his learning style and approach, so he can make learning to kiteboard and surf fun and safe. Just ask this guy anything about extreme sports, and he will be more than happy to help you out.

Ray Ray:
We're happy to announce our newest Kiting.com team member. Ray Ray is one of our expert surf instructors. She's been surfing for years and years, and can surf with the best of the best. And don't think just because she's a 100lb pretty little girl that she can't handle big waves. Ray Ray can handle!

Ray Ray is also an expert kiteboard instructor!

Denver Coon (aka Cooter): "Official Pro Guest Instructor"
Denver Coon has been kiting since the birth of kiteboarding, and the large majority of this time has been spent traveling from one professional contest to the next. His dominance on the kiteboarding circuit has led to a rapid evolution of the sport. And he still seems to keep pushing the limits each day with his extreme wake and surf style. We're excited to have him on board, and you can only hope to get Denver as your pro instructor!

"United we stand, divided we get more things done"

"How to save the world: Find a problem (that shouldn't be too hard), come up with a solution, rally people behind your cause, sell $10 t-shirts to help spread your message, and then stop - you'll already have enough money to buy a Prius and replace all the lights in your house with CFL's"

Bryan Lake (aka Bernie):
Rated 15th in the world for the best kiteboard wave rider! Bryan competes in many professional kiteboarding events such as freestyle, hang-time, and racing. Bryan's one of the best riders out there, so get ready for an action-packed time with Bryan.

He's also one of the best kiteboard instructors in the world, so if you ask this guy anything about kiting you can be assured to get the right answer. And if you're lucky, you might be able to see Bryan up on the North Shore of Oahu dropping in on some 20ft plus waves!

Bryan Lake is Top Hat Certfied (THC) certified, so you can be guaranteed to get the most out of your lesson. THC certifications are only given out to the elite pro kiteboard instructors. And most professional kiters can't even get this certification. Beginner kiters please beware! Bryan will get you up and riding faster than any IKO or PASA certified kiteboard instructor, guaranteed!

Top Hat (aka Hat):

Officially considered the mayor of kiteboarding. There's really not much we can say about "Hat" except he's pretty much done everything known to kiteboarding, and done it better than anyone else. He has competed professionally for over ten years, and he continues to rip everyday. He's a good role model for any new rider, and we're thrilled to have him on the team!

Hat was the founder of "THC" kiteboard instructors, and he is the only one that can issue these certifications. It takes years and years for him to give you the THC approval unlike other kiteboard certifications. And once Hat gives you the approval you'll know you're the very best kiteboard instructor. Please do not take lessons with anything less because this will be dangerous for you and for the sport!

Thanks Hat for coming on board with Kiting.com!
